Choosing Your Wedding Photographer: It's More Than Just Beautiful Photos

When couples first start planning their wedding, they often think about photography in terms of style.
Do you like bright and airy? Dark and moody? Documentary? Editorial?
And while style is absolutely important – your experience matters so much more!
After sitting down with Mike Fried of Sonacity Photography, I was reminded that the right photographer is about so much more than the photos themselves.
Your photographer is one of the few vendors who will be with you from the very beginning of your wedding journey until the very end of your reception. They're documenting the biggest moments of your day, calming nerves, helping create your timeline, and preserving memories that will last a lifetime.
Here are some of the biggest takeaways from our conversation.
The First Question Isn't "How Much?"—It's "Do We Vibe?"
One thing Mike said immediately stood out to me.
"It's pretty much like dating."
It sounds funny at first, but it's so true! (and honestly it’s one of the best ways I've ever heard someone describe choosing a photographer.)
You'll spend more time with your photographer on your wedding day than almost anyone else. They're with you while you're getting ready. They're there during emotional moments. They're standing beside you during portraits, keeping you relaxed when the nerves hit, and celebrating with you on the dance floor later that evening.
If you don't genuinely enjoy being around them, you better believe that discomfort will rear its ugly face in your wedding photos.
As a planner, this is one of the reasons photographers are often among the first vendors I encourage couples to book—right after securing the venue. Your engagement session becomes the perfect opportunity to start building that relationship before the wedding day arrives. By the time your wedding comes around, you're no longer standing in front of a stranger with a camera. You're working with someone who already knows how to bring out both of your personalities–naturally.
Your Wedding Should Feel Like You
One of my favorite parts of our conversation was talking about venues.
Mike shared that many of his couples are drawn toward unique spaces because they reflect who they are. His own wedding took place at Orlando Science Center, and many of his clients choose venues that showcase their personalities rather than simply following tradition.
I couldn’t agree more with this sentiment!
Some couples love an elegant ballroom.
Others want dinosaurs, aquariums, industrial lofts, botanical gardens, or art museums.
There is no “right” or “wrong” when you’re planning a wedding that is uniquely yours.
As planners, we spend so much time helping couples identify their priorities because once your wedding reflects your personality, (instead of someone else's expectations), every decision becomes easier.
Styled Shoots Are Inspiration—Not Expectations
If you've spent any amount of time on Pinterest or Instagram, you've probably fallen in love with a wedding image that was actually created during a styled shoot.
Now just to be clear...
Styled shoots aren't “fake weddings.”
They're creative collaborations that allow vendors to showcase new ideas, unique designs, and possibilities couples may never have considered. It’s also a great opportunity for us vendors to test out new equipment or ideas (so we’re not experimenting on your wedding day).
These photos are meant to inspire–not become a cookie cutter copy of what every wedding “should” look like.
Planner tip: It’s important to keep in mind that many styled shoots are working with a wide range of budget options – what may look simple or minimalistic may still be using luxury elements that may need to be modified to fit within your budget.
The Case for a First Look
When it came down to the question of a first look – Mike gave a huge thumbs up!
His reasoning wasn't just logistical—it was emotional.
For most couples, your first look is one of the only quiet moments you'll have together all day.
Before the guests, the reception, and before everyone wants your attention.
It's a chance to simply be present and breathe together.
All of those nerves settle and the raw emotion is shared between just the two of you (versus an entire entourage which could completely change the feel of the moment).
There's another practical benefit as well.
Completing as many portraits as possible before the ceremony allows you to actually attend the cocktail hour you've spent months planning and paying for. Instead of disappearing for an hour while everyone else celebrates, you get to enjoy those moments with your guests.
"We're Awkward In Front of the Camera."
Mike laughed when I asked how he handles camera-shy couples because he hears the same sentence over and over again.
"We're awkward."
The truth?
Almost everyone feels that way, (even Mike who has been in front of and behind the camera for over twelve years!)
His approach isn't forcing stiff poses.
It's getting to know the couple long before the wedding day, asking thoughtful questions, using prompts instead of rigid posing, and creating genuine moments that produce natural expressions.
That's another reason your engagement session matters so much.
Confidence isn't created on the wedding day – it’s built through that feeling of “we’ve done this before”.
Professional Experience Matters More Than You Think
When we started talking about the professionals behind the scenes, Mike completely agreed–your wedding team can make or break your experience.
There are five vendors that become the backbone of your wedding day:
Your venue
Your planner
Your photographer
Your caterer
Your DJ
Those are not the places to cut corners.
Mike shared stories of couples who asked family members to photograph their weddings, only to schedule bridal portraits afterward because the wedding images simply weren't what they had hoped for.
Professional photographers aren't just buying expensive cameras.
They're solving problems in real time.
Unexpected rain.
Dark reception spaces.
Complicated lighting.
Timeline changes.
Guest interference.
These are situations experienced professionals handle almost automatically because they've seen them hundreds of times before.
Great Wedding Photography Starts Long Before the Wedding
One thing I really appreciated hearing was how much planning happens before Mike ever picks up his camera.
He helps with so many things before your wedding day such as:
Building photography timelines
Coordinating with planners
Discussing locations
Determining how much coverage you need
Even engagement sessions begin with conversations about how the couple actually wants to display their photographs inside their home.
The conversation really shows how intentional planning goes beyond just “taking photos on your wedding day” and creates the vision for how you want to share those memories with your future spouse for years to come.
Your Guests Don't Need to Watch Through Their Phones
When I asked Mike about phones during weddings, his answer was simple.
Ceremony?
Put them away.
Reception?
Have fun.
An unplugged ceremony allows your guests to experience the moment instead of watching it through a screen—and it also prevents Aunt Susan from accidentally blocking your first kiss with an iPad.
Trust your professional photographer to capture those moments.
Your guests will thank you later.
Final Thoughts
One thing became incredibly clear during this conversation.
Photography isn't just about creating beautiful images —it's about preserving emotion.
Years from now, you'll probably forget what your centerpieces looked like or what kind of appetizers were served during cocktail hour.
But one thing is for sure is that you'll never stop looking back at the photographs that remind you exactly how you felt.
So when you choose your photographer, choose someone whose work you love and who you can trust but most importantly...
Choose someone you genuinely enjoy spending time with.
Because Mike said it best—
Choosing your photographer is a little bit like dating.
And when you find the right fit, you'll feel it.
